Tulips have such a strong structure, and such vibrant colours that I could not resist capturing them, albeit in a variety of mediums.  Each of the compositions focuses on the flower heads only, to get right to the heart of the matter.

I enjoyed using soft pastels to get the velvety texture of the petals, but then I also used wax pastels in other compositions, to draw attention to petal shape.  The blue wax pastel composition ignores the true flower colour completely, and instead becomes a simple line drawing – demonstrating just how recognisable the simple tulip shape is.
