This collection of water colour and ink drawings is based on the French coastal town of St Tropez, and was inspired by my most recent visit there, in 2009. It was a cold but clear day, and the gentle pastel colours of the buildings were drenched in the fantastic light that is found in southern France.
Although St Tropez is still considered to be a place for the famous and rich, I found it to have a faded glory, perhaps as seaside resorts do, when out of season, but it was more than that. The buildings, the rooftops and the harbour were still beautiful, but just a little jaded and crumbly.
I have tried to capture this mixed feeling in my drawings, where roofs are not always straight, and where the shutters are sometimes hanging off – but where colours are picked up and enhanced by the sunlight.
