Butterfly Bouquet

The collective noun for a group of butterflies is a ‘rabble’, and in this collection I have tried to capture the colours, the spirit and the movement of a rabble of butterflies, as if they are fledging from one place.

I have used the paints loosely, using the ‘wet on wet’ technique, to allow the colours to merge and run, and in most of these paintings, I have then hinted at butterfly wings with either ink or with water colour pencil, to introduce some structure.

The name of the collection comes from an unintentional result – that these rabbles appear almost like bouquets of flowers, as they both share a fragile texture and a temporary presence.
